Therapy for Veterans in Ontario
Military service can shape how you understand yourself, your relationships, and the world around you. Therapy can provide space to explore those changes while building on the strengths you've developed through service. Dare to Care Health offers virtual therapy for veterans across Ontario, led by Nikka, a Registered Psychotherapist (RP). Sessions are built around an understanding of military life, not a copy of civilian or first-responder support with different labels.

How Military Service Affects Mental Health
Your training taught you to stay alert, stay composed, and get the job done. Those skills served you well in service. Out of uniform, they can feel harder to switch off, or harder to explain to people who never served. Deployment, operational stress, and the structure of military life all shape how you relate to yourself and others. This is not damage. It's a different set of tools, built for a different environment. Therapy here starts from that understanding, not from a deficit view of what service left behind.

A Strengths-Based Approach to Veteran Therapy
Service asked a lot of you: discipline, adaptability, loyalty to the people beside you. Those strengths don't disappear after release. They're something to build on. Sessions give you a space to make sense of how service shaped you, reconnect with a sense of purpose in civilian life, and work through what's changed in your relationships and your sense of identity. You don't have to perform, explain everything, or hold it all together here. You don't have to do this alone.
How Virtual Therapy Sessions Work
Sessions take place virtually, over video or by telephone, so you can join from anywhere in Ontario. There's no commute and no waiting room. Sessions typically run 50 or 75 minutes, with shorter 25-minute check-ins also available. Your first appointment is simple: we talk through what's bringing you in, and what you're hoping for. From there, we build a plan together, at a pace that works for you. Booking takes a minute through our online booking page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does OHIP or insurance cover this?
OHIP doesn't typically cover psychotherapy outside of hospital or specific public programs. Veterans Affairs Canada may cover treatment benefits for eligible veterans, and many extended health plans also cover Registered Psychotherapists. Check with VAC or your provider to confirm.
Do I need a referral from VAC or the CAF to see you?
No. You can book directly with Dare to Care Health. A VAC referral is only required for services like the OSI clinic network, not for private virtual therapy.
Will you understand military life if I haven't seen combat?
Yes. Operational stress, deployment, and the transition out of service can affect you regardless of your specific role or whether you saw combat. Support here isn't limited to a single type of experience.
Is this confidential?
Yes. Sessions are held on a secure, encrypted platform, and confidentiality follows the standards set by the CRPO. Full details are in our Privacy Policy.
